Bruce
Crower convinced Big Daddy to try an inverted wing on Swamp
Rat V. In the book "Tales From The Drag Strip",
Garlits quoted Crower as saying, "We have got to have
more traction, because the cars are so light and we have so
much power. This wing is free. We'll get some downforce without
suffering a lot of drag." The car met resistance at the
1963 Winternationals from NHRA tech inspector Jack Hart, who
declared the device "the most obnoxious-looking thing
I've ever seen." Garlits' response: "Jack, when
the smoke clears, every dragster in competition everywhere
will have a wing on it someday. Trust me."
Garlits
and his new mount went on to win that weekend.
Years later, Big Daddy added, "I think they all have
wings now."
