The Woody-built
"Fighting Irish" Top Fueler of Tim Beebe & John
"Zookeeper" Mulligan was a crowd favorite on the
So-Cal circuit and at national events in 1968-1969. Driver
Mulligan demonstrated the car's strength when he set an NHRA
national speed record of 229.59 mph at Orange County Int'l
Raceway Sept. 14, 1968. After several runner-up national event
finishes, the team won the 1969 Winternationals, and carried
on winning until that year's NHRA Nationals, where Mulligan
qualified with an astonishing 6.43. Sadly, Mulligan suffered
fatal injuries during eliminations that weekend, and the car
was destroyed.
In 1999
Californian Dave
West commissioned Pat Foster to build a recreation of
the famous car, which has been thrilling drag fans young and
old alike since its 2000
debut.
